The Top 10 Organic Foods

If you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle and like to cook balanced, nutritious meals for yourself and your family, chances are you would like to fill your supermarket trolley with only the best organic produce.  However, a diet full of nutrient rich, tasty food, free from herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics or growth hormones comes with a hefty price tag, costing around 60% more than regular produce.

I don’t know about you but the amount of food I buy on my weekly shop seems to get smaller while the cost is ever increasing.  In these times of recession, when watching the pennies is ever more important, choosing the more expensive organic options may not be so tempting and may even not be an option.

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to make a few organic choices next time you go shopping, what organic foods are worth paying that bit extra for?  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has put together a ‘Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce’.  They analysed pesticide residue data and compiled a list with the foods at the top of the list showing the most pesticides:

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Strawberries
  4. Peaches
  5. Spinach
  6. Nectarines
  7. Grapes
  8. Sweet Peppers
  9. Potatoes
  10. Blueberries

The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure but if some of your favourites appear on the list you may feel it is worth paying that little bit extra.  The EWG’s complete guide of 53 fruits & veggies can be found at
